Welcome to Dawlish College.
It is an absolute privilege to have been invited to take on the role of Head Of College at Dawlish College; especially at such a positive time as it flourishes within the Formal Management Partnership with Newton Abbot College. Our GCSE results this year have been excellent with students out-performing the national average in many subjects and English and maths passes being the highest in the area.
Dawlish College is a vibrant and exciting place to be, where we have the highest expectations of staff and students alike and seek to provide challenge at every available opportunity. As a small school, we have a very proud record of holistic support, care and individual attention: the happiness and well-being of our students is of paramount importance and is a vital foundation for their growth and development. Our college has an atmosphere of creativity and positivity that is generated by the provision of excellent opportunities for every individual thereby maximising the outcomes and improving the life chances of the young people in our care.
As a parent myself, I understand that you want your child to be inspired, supported and challenged to be the best version of themselves within an environment that knows them and values them as an individual. Thank you for entrusting me with the care and education of your child, present or future, and I look forward to unlocking their ambitions as I get to know them and work closely with you.
Head Of College
Welcome to the diverse world of science at Dawlish College. Here we aim to foster innovation, imagination and critical thinking as we study the world around us and our place in it. As scientists we are curious about all things – from the smallest subatomic particle to the largest structures in the Universe. Our goal is to develop independent young scientists who can contribute to the thriving scientific community around the globe.
It’s straight down to business in year 7 covering a range of topics across all three disciplines (biology, chemistry and physics).
B1: Living systems
C1: The particulate nature of matter
P1: Forces and motion
B2: Diet and health
C2: Atoms, elements and compounds
P2: Levers, moments and pressure
B3: Genetic and evolution
P3: Electricity and electromagnetism
By the end of year 8 students will have a solid foundation in the key scientific theories and will be well-placed to move onto either double award science as part of their core curriculum or opt to take triple science as an option.
B4: Photosynthesis, respiration and circulation
C4: Acids and alkalis
B5: Reproduction and growth
C5: Materials and everyday chemistry
C6: The Earth and atmosphere
There are two possible routes for studying science at GCSE:
1) Study for a double award in science (across all three disciplines combined) and gain two GCSEs.
2) Choose to take separate sciences (each science taught and assessed separately) as an option choice and gain three GCSEs.
Both follow the AQA specification and further details of the courses can be found in the Guide to Options.
