Welcome to Dawlish College.
It is an absolute privilege to have been invited to take on the role of Head Of College at Dawlish College; especially at such a positive time as it flourishes within the Formal Management Partnership with Newton Abbot College. Our GCSE results this year have been excellent with students out-performing the national average in many subjects and English and maths passes being the highest in the area.
Dawlish College is a vibrant and exciting place to be, where we have the highest expectations of staff and students alike and seek to provide challenge at every available opportunity. As a small school, we have a very proud record of holistic support, care and individual attention: the happiness and well-being of our students is of paramount importance and is a vital foundation for their growth and development. Our college has an atmosphere of creativity and positivity that is generated by the provision of excellent opportunities for every individual thereby maximising the outcomes and improving the life chances of the young people in our care.
As a parent myself, I understand that you want your child to be inspired, supported and challenged to be the best version of themselves within an environment that knows them and values them as an individual. Thank you for entrusting me with the care and education of your child, present or future, and I look forward to unlocking their ambitions as I get to know them and work closely with you.
Head Of College
The last full section 5 inspection at Dawlish College was in December 2016. This inspection highlighted many strengths in the College including student behaviour, student safety, student development and the curriculum. At the time, the College was rated as ‘requires improvement’ and several areas for development were highlighted.
A year later, in December 2017, the inspectorate returned to complete a monitoring visit. The feedback from this visit was very positive and highlighted that the Governance and Leadership of the College were taking effective action to make the necessary improvements highlighted at the previous inspection. The inspector made particular note of the higher expectations now placed on students and the sharp rise in achievement of students. The conclusion of this monitoring visit was that in order to increase the rate of improvement still further the College should find itself a relationship with an appropriate partner school.
On January 1st 2018 the college entered a formal management partnership with Newton Abbot College. This is a sharing of Governance and Leadership that has increased the capacity for rapid improvement here at Dawlish College. Paul Cornish is Executive Principal of the formal management partnership and in May 2018 Rachel Wickham was appointed as Head of College. Under this new leadership structure the College is thriving and moves confidently toward a judgement of ‘good’ at its next full inspection.
In March 2018, a County School Improvement Visit noted the positive impact of the formal management partnership on Dawlish College in such a short space of time. It made particular note of the purposeful and calm atmosphere in the College, the excellent response of the students to the heightened expectations and the contribution of staff to the drive for improvement.
Exam results in 2018 show significant improvement across the board and more information can be found here.
