Head's Welcome

Head of College Welcome

Welcome to Dawlish College.

It continues to be an absolute privilege to be the Headteacher at Dawlish College – the staff and students are second to none and take all of life’s challenges in their stride. Despite current uncertainties as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic, we continue to hold onto our core purpose in all that we do. Behind all of the decisions taken and measures put in place sits the balance between keeping staff and students safe whilst also providing them with a varied and exciting school experience.

Dawlish College is a vibrant and exciting place to be, where we have the highest expectations of staff and students alike and seek to provide challenge at every available opportunity. As a small school, we have a very proud record of holistic support, care and individual attention: the happiness and well-being of our students is of paramount importance and is a vital foundation for their growth and development. Our college has an atmosphere of creativity and positivity that is generated by the provision of excellent opportunities for every individual thereby maximising the outcomes and improving the life chances of the young people in our care.

As a parent myself, I understand that you want your child to be inspired, supported and challenged to be the best version of themselves within an environment that knows them and values them as an individual. Thank you for entrusting me with the care and education of your child, present or future, and I look forward to unlocking their ambitions as I get to know them and work closely with you.

Vacancy: Raising Standards Leader - English

Raising Standards Leader – English

Required from September 2022
MPS / UPS + TLR 2b (£4,785)
full-time permanent vacancy

Dawlish College is a vibrant and exciting place to be. As a relatively small school we have the luxury of knowing every young person as an individual whilst also being able to offer every opportunity. Working collaboratively, having fun and enjoying what we do is at the heart of what it means to work with us and we believe that this is why students thrive, our outcomes are strong and we are growing year on year.

Dawlish College is part of Estuaries Multi Academy Trust. At Estuaries Multi Academy Trust, we have exceptional expectations of our students and staff and we welcome applicants who share our commitment to place student learning at the centre of everything we do. Our induction programme is excellent, and all staff are involved in an innovative CPD programme. Estuaries Trust is an inspiring place to work, with staff who are dedicated to increasing opportunities, maximising outcomes and improving the life chances of all pupils and families that we serve, and to nurture, develop and grow the talent of staff.

The English department at Dawlish College is small but perfectly formed! We are a tight knit department who work well together to support the students, the school and each other. We are a dynamic department which constantly looks to improve the delivery of the subject we all care about. The successful applicant will need to be a genuinely reflective and flexible practitioner and committed to continued professional development. A true passion for the subject and high-level knowledge and skills are essential.

We follow the AQA syllabus at Key Stage 4 for both English Language and Literature and we currently teach 'Macbeth,' 'A Christmas Carol,' 'Animal Farm' and the Power and Conflict section for the Anthology. At Key Stage 3 we are committed to using texts which stimulate and engage our cohorts, seeing Literature as the way to ensure pupils engage with our subject, have skills they can use across the curriculum and leave the school as a more wholly rounded, empathic individual.

The department is well resourced, and we do make efforts to give pupils opportunities to see dramatic works on stage. We work closely with the library - especially in Years 7 and 8 - to encourage a love of reading, and in those years each class currently has one library session per fortnight where we also promote our use of Accelerated Reader.

We are seeking an outstanding individual with drive, passion, enthusiasm and ambition to lead our department in the next stage of its development and beyond. Your challenge will be to lead the department in developing even more engaging and effective lessons and achieving even higher levels of student progress.

If you think you can make a difference to our students and relish the idea of joining our successful, supportive and highly motivated team in the delivery of an excellent English education, then we want to hear from you!

You will have high expectations of student achievement and behaviour, good communication skills and a commitment to working as part of a team.

Please see the job description and person specification for further details regarding this post.

If you like what you see and read and believe that you can support us in continuing to achieve great things here at Dawlish College, then do get in touch.
