The college is committed to Careers Education, Information, Advice and guidance (CEIAG) and works closely with Careers South West Ltd, FE Colleges, Universities and Employers to encourage and support students into post-16 learning and training. Our Careers Education, Information, Advice and Guidance Policy is available here.

We deliver an excellent careers provision here at Dawlish Community College. Recognised by Ofsted as providing a good and successful programme for careers, we continue to deliver this to all years, year on year.

We continue to run the mock interviews at the start of Year 11. In September 2017 a number of business professionals were very complimentary about the good standard of this year’s candidates.  140 Year 11 students attended the mock interviews at the Langstone Cliff Hotel and feedback from this event was extremely positive and has helped prepare them for their post 16 career choices.   Each student received verbal and written feedback and was keen to take part in this event.

Year 10, instead of work experience week, are offered a Careers Week full of activities including careers talks, a session on how to find apprenticeships locally, nationally and globally and interactive workshops facilitated by some of our local Colleges.   We will also arrange visits during this week and at other points throughout the year to post 16 Colleges, including Exeter College, Newton Abbot College, Bicton College and South Devon College.  These trips run alongside our weekly careers assembly programme where colleges, universities and industry are invited into the college to speak to our Year 10 and Year 11 cohort on a weekly basis, offering guidance and broadening their horizons.   We continue to maintain strong links with Flybe, The Met Office, NHS and many other businesses within the Dawlish and Exeter region; we work closely with an Enterprise Advisor with the aim to run a careers mentoring scheme with local businesses coming in to the college to mentor students who need more career focus and help with improving their confidence, ambition and motivation.

In addition to a full careers programme for our Key Stage 4 students we are always keen to open minds to various career paths for our Key Stage 3 students as well. In October2017, for the first time, we invited an experienced marine engineer into the classroom to deliver two exciting engineering workshops.  Interactive discussion took place between the students in Years 7 and 8 as they were encouraged to find appropriate solutions to different engineering problems. Students at Key Stage 3 also experience a number of STEM related events, on a half termly basis, (Science Technology, Engineering and Mathematics).   Years 8 and 9 are also engaged with a PiXL Edge programme that encourages them to work on life skills that will build upon attributes businesses have said are currently in high demand.
