Oxford University talk – June 2016

Students were very grateful for this Oxford talk experience at St James school in Exeter and felt by being invited along on this trip, they were being recognised for their hard work so far and felt encouraged to achieve well academically here at Dawlish Community College.

Discussing this event with students on the way home, there were many positives. Students said they were interested in visiting a school in Exeter so different in design.

Students learnt about University expectations and this led to a healthy discussion about target grades and MEG’s with the Head of Upper school and Head of Careers. Expectations from Universities made them reflect on their progress in various subjects.  The talk provided information about the type of Oxford student and made our students think about whether that is them, or not.  Students listening to this talk learnt about the vast choices they have post 16 and post 18 and to give their work experience and decisions about future courses careful thought as they progress through KS4 and KS5.

Bicton College Experience day – July 2016

We had an extremely fun day out at Bicton College exploring different course options in July. Students signed up to various experience days where they were able to sample different careers from animal management and veterinary science to forestry, tree surgery, farm management and floristry. Students that attended the day were really excited about the different experiences they had had and it gave them a sample of what to expect if they attended Bicton College post 16.

We were very grateful to Bicton College for hosting this day for our students.

Work Experience – Summer 2016

Dawlish Community College year 10 students have been given much praise from business and industry after their work experience placements this summer.   Companies such as Flybe were impressed with all four students who managed to successfully get placed with them this year. We continue to be offered placements with the NHS as the impressive new research and development building in Exeter. We also had a successful placement with Exeter Cathedral for the first time this year and with many other local businesses and industry.  The feedback has been very positive and will help us to continue making strong links with local business and industry here at Dawlish Community College.   We are grateful to all companies who have given us work experience opportunities this year.

If your business is interested in offering work experience placements for next summer or you would like to work with Dawlish Community College or are interested, please contact Amanda Moore – Head of Careers.
