Dawlish Community College is a medium sized 11-16 fully inclusive secondary school with 674 students located in a beautiful part of South Devon. While the College is big enough to offer a full range of curriculum options from traditional GCSE courses such as History and Spanish through to more applied courses such as Health and Social Care and Business Studies, we are also small enough to know individual students, which leads to a very special ethos within the College.
The College is currently in a very exciting phase of its development. OfSTED visited in October 2012 and graded the College as Good overall and Good in the categories of Teaching, Achievement and Behaviour and Outstanding in the category of Leadership and Management.
In addition the College was amongst the first secondary schools in Devon to become a Co-operative Trust School. This is a very exciting and innovative alternative to Academy status and has led to the formation of our own Board of Trustees called The Exe Estuary Academic Co-operative Trust which now hold the land and assets of the College in a Trust on behalf of the Governing Body. Our Board of Trustees have been appointed to further develop a fantastic educational experience for students at the College. Trustees include Exeter College and South Devon College, who we work closely with to ensure excellent progression routes. In 2014 our NEET rate was zero.
The College is very proud to celebrate and recognise the achievement of all students from a wide range of abilities. We are very inclusive and able to tailor our teaching and curriculum in order to ensure every student reaches their potential. This is illustrated by the fact that recently we have helped students to achieve their ambition to study Mathematics at Oxford University alongside students who have been Hairdresser of the Year at their College of Further Education. The College recognises that all achievement is equally important to that individual student.
The College campus is compact and level with all the amenities easily accessible for disabled or wheelchair-bound students. The College is organised into teaching areas which makes it very easy for students to find their way around, and includes a Drama studio, Music recording studio and practice rooms, excellent technology equipment such as Computer Aided Design machinery with both laser and plasma cutters, newly refurbished Science laboratories and excellent social spaces such as the Quad for students to relax in at break and lunch.
In terms of sporting facilities the College has a state of the art floodlit Astroturf pitch alongside both a football pitch and mini rugby pitch. In addition to an onsite gymnasium the College also has full access to Dawlish Leisure Centre with an excellent Sports Hall and swimming pool.
Rewards are very important at the College and help us to create an ethos of high expectation, respect for each other and culture of success. Our ePraise system has been developed so that parents and carers can track their child’s rewards online, however we also hold regular assemblies where success is celebrated, as well as issuing postcards home to let parents and carers know how well their child is doing. Achievements are recorded and feed into our ePraise system and Graduation at Key Stage 4 which further motivates students to do their very best.
The College has a very wide range of extra-curricular clubs and activities from various choirs and musical ensembles through to karaoke club as well as extensive sporting clubs and teams. For older students our Upper School Learning Hub is open until 5.30pm from Monday to Thursday for extra support in addition to a very wide range of extra support sessions that are held after school, at weekends and in the school holidays, particularly at Easter in Year 11 when we hold an Easter Revision School.
