24 hour concert: 2 February 2018

The Expressive Arts Department would like to invite you to participate in the 24 hour concert 2018, the date for which is 2nd February. This concert is now in its fifth year and goes from strength to strength with over 150 students taking part over the 24 hours – performing or stage managing. This year our chosen charity  is the “Nayamba School”. This is an Exminster based charity that supports a primary school in Zambia. Please take a minute to read this information concerning the fantastic work they do. If you would like to read more about it, their website is www.nayambaschool.org

“Nayamba Primary School was established on Nagwaza Farm in the Chisamba district of Zambia by the farm owners. It was established to educate the children of the families working on all the surrounding farms because there was no primary school close enough or affordable. This wonderful free school has attracted many children from the surrounding area. The number of children attending daily now exceeds 290.

The school initially consisted of 3 classrooms and one small office. The school was having to offer half day timetables in order to provide education for grades 1-7. It now consists of 9 classrooms, a preschool, kitchen, staff room and a library space. The charity has also built accommodation for all teaching staff so they are able to live on site. (Given its rural location, there were no local accommodation options.) It now has a caretaker, who maintains the grounds and buildings, and a cook, who provides a hot enriched porridge for every pupil each day. The Charity has also built a playground, football pitch and netball court for the children to enjoy. The school follows the Zambian curriculum and pupils of each grade can now have their own classroom and teacher each day.

The money raised is split equally to help fund Expressive Arts within Dawlish Community College and our designated charity. Letters will be going out shortly with more information on the concert and how to get involved.

Many thanks for your continued support of Expressive Arts here at Dawlish Community College
